A lot of interesting things are coming to you in the cross-play update which is live today, June 24th, as a free addition for Borderlands 3 players!
A new blog post on the official Borderlands 3 website revealed that the cross-play update was finally live for all platforms. The obvious exceptions here are both the PS4 and the PS5, which will be omitted from the cross-play update due to the previously released Borderlands Developer Gearbox certificate.
Right now though, cross-play updates live for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Google Stadia Border 3 players. The next time you launch the game, you'll be prompted to choose a cross-play initiative and set up a new name that has not already been taken by another player on another platform. Once you're through it, you're ready to explore the new "SHIFT Matchmaking" feature.
As for the cross-play update though, we're not really sure what's going on about the PlayStation platforms being dropped from the new feature. If this is a certification issue on PS4 and PS5 that Gearbox said earlier, it is quite possible that cross-play on the PlayStation platform could come in the future after resolving any issues. Roy's comments came as a surprise with the news of the release of Borderlands 3 cross-play on the PlayStation platform. We will have to wait and see more about the possibility of cross-play expansion in the future.
Just earlier this week, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan confirmed that Sony "wants to support and encourage cross-play across its ecosystem." Ryan pointed to the list of games, including Fornet, Call of Duty, Minecraft, and Rocket League, highlighting the PlayStation's promise of cross-play, but noted that Sony has become infamous for its cross-play initiative, especially when compared to its competitors on the Xbox.
PlayStation plans to launch its next-gen console for a full view of all the games, check out our upcoming PS5 Games Guide for more to come.
